Football may refer to one of a number of team sports which all involve, to varying degrees, kicking a ball with the foot to score a goal. The most popular of these sports worldwide is association football, more commonly known as just "football" or "soccer". Unqualified, the word foodball applies to whichever form of football is the most popular in the regional context in which the word appears, including American football, Australian football, Canadian football, Gaelic league, rugby league, etc and other related games. These variations of football are known as football "codes". Much debate has taken place as to what true football is. To millions all over the world football is what is played by teams such as Manchester United - with "heroes" such as David Beckham leading their countries to victory in "The World Cup". For weeks at a time during this event, many people can think of nothing else - television is disrupted, patriotic flags hang out of car windows and many are left elated, or devastated when "their" team goes out.
